Manolo blahnik shoesDAMASCUS, June 2 () -- A Syrian brigadier-general was killed Saturday by the gunfire of armed groups along with his driver in a suburban area near the Syrian capital Damascus, state- run SANA news agency reported.The officer had been targeted while en route to his work earlier in the day in the eastern Ghouta area near Damascus, said SANA.The assassination came as part of growing trend of violence targeting army officers and anyone affiliated to the Syrian government.The Syrian crisis is seemingly careening towards a sectarian rift, as revenge crimes and sectarian conflicts have hit a new high over the past recent months in Syria's 15-months old unrest.The international community is still ostensibly rallying behind the six-point peace plan negotiated by international envoy Kofi Annan. However, some voices have joined the Qatari and Saudi chorus that calls for arming and financing the rebels, who are showing unwavering desire to drive away the rule of President Bashar al-Assad by force rather than sitting on the dialogue table to solve the protracted crisis.
ABUJA, April 16 () -- Nigeria's Minister of Finance and World Bank presidential candidate Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Monday in Abuja said the U.S. candidate Jim Yong Kim would win the post since the selection was not based on merit.The Nigerian minister made this comments few hours before the 25-man executive board of directors of the bank meets in Washington to decide who gets the post.She told a gathering in Abuja, the Nigeria capital, that the selection of a World Bank president was not based on merit."I want people to know what is happening and that is that they are voting," Okonjo-Iweala told reporters."This thing is not really being decided on merit. It is voting with political weights and shares and therefore the U.S. will get it," she added.Okonjo-Iweala, Jos?? Antonio Ocampo of Colombia and U.S.'s Jim Yong Kim were originally the three candidates vying for the post, but on Friday Ocampo pulled out to shore up support for Okonjo- Iweala.Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian national, is currently the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance of Nigeria.Prior to the government post, she worked in the World Bank from 2007 to 2011, under outgoing Robert Zoellick, whose term expires at the end of June. She had held a number of positions, including country director in the East Asia region, director of operations in the Middle East, and vice president of the Bank. Along with her role of special oversight for the Bank's work in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia and South Asia, Okonjo- Iweala also played a key role in overseeing the Bank's continuing work to help countries adversely impacted by spiking and volatile food prices. Born in 1954, Okonjo-Iweala was finance minister and later foreign minister of Nigeria from 2003 to 2006. She studied economics at Harvard University and earned a PhD in regional economics and development in Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is married and a mother of four children. Enditem
