GAZA, May 28 () -- Palestinian elections committee began working officially in the Gaza Strip Monday after Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haneya gave his go-ahead, officials said.Hamas' previous refusal to allow the Central Elections Commission (CEC) to operate in Gaza had prevented Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party from implementing a Qatari- brokered reconciliation agreement with Hamas. The deal to form a transitional government and hold elections was signed in February. The CEC needs six weeks to update the electoral register and will arrange this process with the Hamas government here, said Hanna Nasser, the head of the commission, after meeting with Haneya."The CEC now works with full confidence after Haneya blessed its role," Nasser told reporters in Gaza. The CEC staff came from the West Bank Monday to see Haneya and brief him on the work plan of the elections body.In Gaza, about 250,000 people have become eligible to vote since Hamas took over the territory by force in 2007.The Qatari agreement suggests that Abbas form a government to rule the Gaza Strip and the West Bank until elections. On May 20, officials from Hamas and Fatah agreed in the Egyptian capital of Cairo to allow the CEC to operate in Gaza and hold elections after six months.? Special Report: Palestine-Israel Conflicts
