MANILA, Dec. 3 () -- The Philippine government raised on Saturday concern on the increasing number of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV- AIDS) cases in the country.Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte, in an interview over a state-run radio station, said that the Department of Health (DOH) is taking action to address the problem."This (increasing number of cases) is a point of concern for us. ..The DOH is acting and taking immediate steps to arrest the rise, " she said. She said one of the major steps that the government has been taking is the information campaign.Valte said it is important to inform the public what is HIV- AIDS and how it is being acquired.Latest data from the DOH showed that there were 7,884 cases of HIV-AIDS in the Philippines since 1984 and in October alone, 200 new cases were reported. Most of the cases or 6,440 were males and since 1984, 339 people died due to AIDS. LHASA, Jan. 8 () -- Senior officials of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region have pledged stepped-up efforts to strengthen the management of monasteries in the fight against the Dalai Lama group.Basang Toinzhub, a senior political advisor in Tibet, said at a meeting of the regional committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Sunday that it is a top priority to maintain stability, enhance unity, and promote harmony in Tibet because it concerns the stability of the nation. The official, deputy head of the CPPCC Tibet committee, said the committee will focus this year's work on helping the government strengthen the management of monasteries to push forward the patriotic and legal education among monks and nuns.Basang Toinzhub's speech came only a day after Chen Quanguo, Tibet's top official, made a similar pledge. In his visit to Lhasa's Sera Monastery Saturday, Chen told the monastery's monks that stability is not only good for the nation and people but also good for the Tibetan Buddhism and its monasteries. He urged monks to cherish the current unity and stability and unswervingly fight against the separatist activities of the Dalai Lama group.Latest statistics show that Tibet has more than 1,700 religious sites, accommodating 46,000 monks and nuns. Nearly 90 percent of the region's 2.8 million people, mostly ethnic Tibetans, are devout Buddhists. After the deadly riots of March 14, 2008, thousands of local officials were sent to Tibet's monasteries and take turns to stay there as "station cadres" to strengthen monastery management which include promoting the legal awareness of monks and nuns and dissuade them from being duped by separatist forces and ensure the normal practice of Buddhism. The 14th Dalai Lama, who went into exile in India in 1959, was blamed by the Chinese government to have pulled the strings behind many of the disturbances in China's Tibetan regions including the 2008 riots in Lhasa, which led to the death of at least 18 civilians and one policeman, with businesses looted and residences, shops and vehicles torched.

China's HenanChinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) inspects wheat fields in Xiaoshi Village of Guxiang Township in Linying County, central China's Henan Province, March 17, 2012. Wen made an inspection tour in Linying County and Wuyang County in Luohe of Henan from March 17 to 18. (/Huang Jingwen)ZHENGZHOU, March 18 () -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited central China's Henan province over the weekend to inspect the country's major farming base and rally efforts for this year's grain harvest.Wen flied to Henan on Saturday, just after the closing of the "two sessions" last week. It has been his ninth visit to the agricultural province since he became premier in 2003.The premier examined crop fields and visited local farmers and institutions for agricultural research, in order to gain an overall view of the spring agricultural production.Wheat planting covers more than 79.9 million mu (5.33 million hectares) of farmland in Henan, including 60.84 million mu of high-quality wheat.Wen said efforts should be made to bring the technological role to a full play, enhance management and formulate disaster prevention plans. In Xiaoshi village of Linying county, Wen carefully examined the condition of the field and the wheat. A local agricultural professor told Wen that rainwater and low temperature since last December had contributed to the sound growth of wheat sprouts.Wen said farmers' hard work and guidance offered by agricultural experts are key to harvest and should be appreciated. He also ordered officials to solve the problem of the lack of electricity for water sprinklers in the field. He told villagers that "the minimum purchasing price for wheat will continue to increase this year," and that the government will continue to offer oil subsidies if international oil prices increase. After listening to the introduction to large farming machines and watching the demonstration of a pilotless plane for farming, Wen encouraged researchers to boost farming technological innovation and make efforts in the design, maintenance, use and sale of farming machines, so as to guarantee massive farming production."The fundamental way out for agricultural development lies in technology," Wen said, adding that only technology can improve the country's tight grain supply, especially under the condition that the total area of cultivated land cannot be expanded."Machinery farming is an irreversible trend, as more and more young farmers choose to work in cities," Wen said, adding that the coverage of farming machinery in Henan is 20 percentage higher than the national average and the momentum should be maintained.Farming technology schools should be improved so that better educated farmers could join the force of agricultural laborers and become "new-generation farmers," he said.Wen also called for improving public services in rural areas. At a local villager's home, the premier promised to increase pensions for the elderly and agricultural subsidies."Agriculture is the foundation for the country's development, and farmers have contributed greatly (to the development)," he said, adding, "Agricultural modernization should not be forgotten during industrialization and urbanization; farmers and the countryside should not be forgotten in developing cities and industries."The State Council, or Cabinet, promulgated measures for boosting Henan's development and the construction of a central economic zone last September, Wen said, adding that "both city dwellers and farmers should lead a more affluent life," and that the environment of both cities and the countryside should be improved. When visiting the Shuanghui Group, a large food company based in Henan, Wen asked the enterprise to focus on food safety and quality as well as integrity and responsibility, as the food sector concerns people's health and safety. 1 2 3 4  1 2 3 4

HARARE, June 20 () -- Zimbabwe government is set to host the International Diamond Conference set for the resort town of Victoria Falls early next month.Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu quoted by state radio on Wednesday said the conference will provide the country with an opportunity to tell the world about its contribution to the growth of the global diamond trade. The conference is being organized by international stakeholders in the diamond industry with officials from the World Diamond Council, the World Federation of Diamond as well as local players expected to be some of the participants at the high level conference.Mpofu said the conference will also provide the country with an opportunity to tell the world that it has complied with the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme regulations, adding that despite illegal sanctions imposed on the country by the West, the demand for local diamonds is still on the increase, hence its high contribution of more than 400 million U.S. dollars to the fiscus over in the last 12 months."No other company or mineral has contributed that much to the fiscus in the last 10 years. Those that say diamond has not contributed to the fiscus are people pursuing political agendas which are misplaced," Mpofu said. The conference which is also expected to attract government ministers will run on July 12-13 and will focus on issues surrounding the diamond trade as well as diamond marketing.
